New Tyneside cat adoption centre to be opened by Stephen Tompkinson and Sam Lavery
11 July 2018
Cats Protection’s 36th adoption centre will be opened at 12pm on Saturday 14 July by actor Stephen Tompkinson and singer-songwriter Sam Lavery.
The new £1.6m state-of-the-art complex, in Green Lane, Gateshead, will be the first centre in the North East. Cats protection helps around 200,000 cats a year, and hopes to increase this number by rehoming over 500 cats and kittens annually at the Tyneside centre.
Stephen Tompkinson, best known for his television roles, such as Marcus in Chancer, said: “Centres like this are vital for communities, both young and old, in helping to rehome and reunite cats but also to educate about how important it is to care for cats.”
Singer-songwriter, Sam Lavery, who will be commencing her second headline tour in November, also expressed the importance of organisations such as Cats Protection and said: “without Cats Protection so many more would live a life
Members of the public are invited to attend the opening from 12pm on Sunday, in preparation for the ribbon to be cut by Stephen and Sam at 1pm. Emzi Frater, Manager at the new Tyneside Adoption centre said: “we are hoping as many people as possible come to our opening event to see the new facilities and consider giving a second chance to a cat.”
Tours of the centre will be offered throughout the day, and guests will be able to meet the cats. Activities, tombola and refreshments will also be available for visitors to enjoy. Guests are urged to use public transport as parking will be limited.
Manager, Emzi, also states that Cats Protection “hope to encourage people to neuter their cats and support education around feline welfare, providing people with a better understanding of cats and their needs.” The new Tyneside centre will help achieve this by raising public awareness on issues regarding cats and allowing a larger number of cats to be rehomed than what was previously possible.
